Economic Policy and International Economics<\/h2>

Rarely have economic policy and international economic relations been as surprising as they are today.<\/p>\n<\/summary>

Conservative parties are scrapping the debt brake; tariff hikes are not leading to inflation; protectionism and industrial policy are becoming socially acceptable again, even in Germany; and key issues such as demographics are being ignored in economic policy or barely addressed with economic instruments. Furthermore, miraculous economic and growth effects are promised from major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, even though the statistical evidence clearly contradicts this.<\/p>\n

My work in the field of economic policy and international economic relations is timely and demand-driven. At the center of my work, for example, are<\/p>\n

\u2026 the question of what effects the aging process has on democratic decision-making<\/p>\n

\u2026 what effects data retention has on crime rates and whether crime can be influenced by mere announcement effects.<\/p>\n

\nwhether a higher proportion of women in leadership bodies positively influences the performance of the respective companies.

Sports Economics<\/h2>

What are the key factors behind successful Olympic bids? What economic and political impacts do major sporting events and their infrastructure have? How can the fight against doping and corruption in sports be improved? Where and against whom does discrimination occur in competitive sports?<\/p>\n<\/summary>

My work on these issues benefits from my good fortune in having experienced and actively participated in many phases and aspects of sports\u2014from youth athletes to Olympic champions, to serving as an expert evaluator for Olympic bids and as an official in active recreational sports\u2014from youth rowing to the current fitness sector\u2014all the way up to elite Olympic competition (6th place at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the coxed four, gold medal in the German eight at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul). In the realm of volunteer work, from active spokesperson for the Berlin State Sports Federation to President of the German Rowing Association (1995 to 2001) and currently as Executive Director of the German Olympic Academy. And in the field of sports consulting, with a wide range of expert reports on financing and economic impacts, including on marathon events, the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, and the Olympic Games in Berlin 2000, Hamburg 2012, Leipzig 2012, and Munich 2018. I hope to be able to empathize relatively well with the emotions and strategies, but also the temptations, of those involved in sports.

Urban Economics and Real Estate Markets, Transport Economics <\/h2>

Housing shortages, rents, and home prices are ubiquitous issues that are primarily driven by (distribution) policy. It is often forgotten that these are primarily economic phenomena that require economic analysis and consideration of the correct causal relationships. This often leads to conclusions that contrast with public perception and democratically legitimized policy.<\/p>\n<\/summary>

Transportation (and transportation studies) are closely linked to issues of urban development: For example, public transit access, environmental zones, and the (lack of) infrastructure for electric mobility are central to the question of how specific cities (or parts of cities) develop.<\/p>\n

In matters of urban economics as well as transportation, it is not only the interests of meso-economic groups such as owners and tenants that may diverge. There can also be conflicting interests within such groups. Measures to revitalize neighborhoods are generally welcomed by owners; tenants often fear gentrification. Capping existing rents is beneficial for current tenants; those looking for housing may feel differently. In my work, I strive to highlight the complex, and at times detrimental, distributional effects of (well-intentioned) real estate policy decisions.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, urban and real estate economics are closely linked to sports economics. For example, many cities around the world bid to host the Olympic Games primarily to drive their urban development.
